Another success for Schal in Harlow

Schal, the Project Management arm of design management and consultancy practice TPS, has been appointed as Project Manager and CDM Coordinator for new sports and leisure facilities in Harlow town centre, Essex.

Phase one of the £50 million scheme began in 2004 with the construction of the new community football ground. The £27m sports centre is the third and final phase of the scheme and is due to be completed in 2009.

Schal is the project manager on several projects for The Harlow Gateway Partnership, the body behind the £50m regeneration initiative in Harlow. The sports centre is one of the flagship initiatives within the Gateway project and will provide local people with brand new leisure facilities on a site off Velizy Avenue in the town centre. Franklin & Andrews is acting as the quantity surveyor on the project.

Located adjacent to Harlow College, the three-storey leisure centre will feature an impressive eight-lane, 25 metre long swimming pool and a second three-lane, 20 metre learner pool. It will host a variety of high standard facilities encompassing three covered tennis courts, eight badminton courts and an 1,100m2 gym, in addition to a sports hall that will also serve as a venue for large conferences, concerts and exhibitions.

The centre will boast wide-ranging health and fitness facilities including a lounge-bar for members, a nursery and a health shop. The centre will also boast the ‘Science Alive’ centre, a hands-on science and technology learning centre for children and adults. Finally, a 500-space car park and landscaping will complete the development.

Schal has already played a key role in the successful delivery of a new community football stadium at Barrows Farm, Harlow which was officially handed over to Harlow Town FC by local MP Bill Rammell. The stadium not only provides a welcome new home for Harlow Town FC but also facilities for the whole community.

David Taylor, a senior project manager with Schal, said: “It is good to see the continued success of The Harlow Gateway Partnership as it achieves another significant milestone and the benefits they are bringing to the local community.”
