TPS Sustainability Week
TPS recently held its fifth annual Sustainability Week, organising a packed programme of events and activities to increase awareness and understanding of sustainability throughout the company.
The week was designed to encourage employees to adopt a more sustainable approach to the projects they are involved in, lead a more sustainable lifestyle and celebrate the good work done by TPS in the community. Each day had a different theme, namely: Transport; Waste; Education in the Community; Health and Wellbeing; and Energy.
TPS managing director, Frank Huidobro, said: “As designers and consultants, we believe we should be at the forefront of sustainable thinking. We always try to persuade our clients to follow our lead and support this effort and Sustainability Week is a great way of bringing the subject to their attention.”
This year, together with sister company Enviros, TPS held a breakfast seminar in London which included a presentation on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, new environmental legislation that affects all buildings in the UK. TPS also inaugurated its School’s Challenge at a school in Croydon, which is intended to encourage young people to think in a sustainable way and provide feedback to help TPS to improve its approach to the way it does things.
Other activities included a TPS debate titled ‘Global Warning is a Hoax’ which tackled a serious issue in a light-hearted way, and an internal football tournament was organised at Crystal Palace under the banner of health and well-being, as illustrated top right. Six teams from TPS and Enviros competed for a stunning replica of the Jules Rimet trophy lovingly crafted from recycled materials!
A number of willing volunteers braved the elements to help at a nature reserve, Wandle Valley Wetlands. To help prepare the site for its open day the TPS team tidied up paths and overgrown hedges and cleared a vast amount of litter, some of which can be seen top left, including several tyres and the odd fridge freezer!
During the week a staff survey was conducted to gather views on sustainability and identify ways in which to improve. The results from this survey can be accessed vai the links area below; a report and action plan based on the results will be prepared shortly.
The week finished with employees being encouraged to enter the Great Sunflower Growing competition. In exchange for a small donation to Macmillan Cancer Support they were given sunflower seeds to plant in their gardens and a prize will be given to the grower of the tallest sunflower by October. In all there were more than 20 events in TPS offices around the country throughout the week.
