Durban “King Shaka” International Airport Opens
15 June 2010
The new “King Shaka” International Airport (KSIA) in Durban, South Africa, has successfully opened, with commercial operations commencing on 1st May, 2010.
TPS were engaged in the Airport’s development process from the early stages; conducting the Feasibility Study, the Airport Masterplan and a Development Options Study for the old Durban Airport as part of KSIA’s Environmental Impact Assessment. The TPS team also took part in the Tender Evaluation and conducted the KSIA Baggage System Review.
The new Airport at La Mercy replaces the old Durban Airport, with a timely opening ready for this summer’s FIFA World Cup. The timescale achieved from start of the Masterplan in 2005 to opening can be regarded as internationally best in class.
According to Monhla Hlahla, Managing Director of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the ultra-modern facility will go a long way in boosting tourism and prospects of the airport becoming a main regional transit hub. Hlahla commented: “The construction of an airport of this magnitude is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in South Africa in recent years. We applaud and commend all role-players who ensured that the project was successfully delivered on schedule.”
“We’re delighted to see this gigantic project come to fruition,” said TPS’s Principal Airport Planner Marco Plarre. “TPS would like to wish the Airport every success in the future.”
