Brian Sanderson
9th January 2012
We have been greatly saddened by the death of Brian Sanderson, who had been fighting a serious illness over the past few months.
A civil engineer by profession, Brian graduated in 1978 and developed his career with several notable practices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, including Grontmij, Cundall and Mott McDonald. He set high goals for himself and was always proud of achieving Chartered status with both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers. He worked on schemes in a wide range of sectors, largely in Scotland but occasionally ranging further afield to places such as Jersey and Accra. A project of which he was particularly proud was the redevelopment of the Tynecastle Football Stadium for Heart of Midlothian FC, given that he was an ardent supporter of the club.
In 2006 Brian joined TPS as Regional Director for Scotland where he was responsible for the management and development of the team of engineers, architects, project managers and surveyors. His extensive knowledge of building structures was ever present and he relished ‘rolling his sleeves up’ to get into the detail of schemes whenever possible.
One of Brian's abiding passions away from the office was golf, walking the course several times a week. He was committed to Pumpherston Golf Club and at one stage he project managed the new extension there in his spare time.
A lover of curry, he frequented his local Indian restaurant so often that he once secured an opportunity to renovate an old cinema and dance hall in Glasgow by overhearing a conversation with a developer at an adjacent table!
Always one to try and get the party started, at an office event several years ago, he startled those present with an energetic Highland Fling in a crowded Edinburgh bar!
As a temporary assignment in November 2010, he took on the challenge of opening our new Muscat office and managing the Muscat Airport project, alongside Carillion Alawi. It was while in Oman that he became ill, returning to Scotland for treatment and care.
A man who valued professionalism, humour and honesty in equal measures, greatly respected by his colleagues and customers, Brian will be missed by all of us at TPS. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his wife Marion and his three children.
